Nisha Narwani

Occupation: Freelance Broadcast Editor
Married For: 9 Years

What Do You Love Most About your job: Everything!! As a child I was a television buff and always wondered what was going on behind the scenes of a TV show, so to be working in the industry is my childhood dream come true.
My job as a Broadcast Editor entails putting TV programs together using professional software. I work with a team of people including Producers and Graphic Designers to produce the programs, so the camaraderie working with a team is great. I also enjoy the fact that I’m allowed to use my creativity when putting programs together as well as satisfy my inner geek with the technical side of the job. These days I mostly work on Sports programs so the fact that I’m a sports fan is an extra bonus for me. In the end, seeing the end product on television is the icing on the cake.

What advice do you have for someone who has just graduated and is trying to choose her dream job:

Firstly, think about something you love doing. Don’t start a career in something you don’t enjoy, just because you think it pays well. You will never get far in a job you hate.

Secondly, if you can help it, don’t look at the money it pays. Many graduates now feel that they should be paid a certain amount just because they have gone through their education but honestly, many employers are looking for experience. It’s a chicken an egg situation. Employers want experience but you can’t get experience unless someone hires you, right? So if you are getting a job in a career you’re trying to get into, just go for it. The money will come with experience. My first job paid me $700 a month, and while many times I felt overworked, the experience I got from it was priceless.

Last but not least, don’t be afraid to try something new. If there is something that you’ve always wanted to do, but it’s outside of your comfort zone, don’t be afraid to try it out. Don’t let anyone discourage you from what you want to do. You will never know until you try and you don’t want to spend the rest your life wondering.

What do you think you can do better than most men:

3 words to describe a Singapore Indian Woman: 3 words are just not enough…I’ll give you five to describe our Women…

What advice do you have for someone who has just graduated and is trying to choose her dream job:
My advice to her is to follow her dreams.
Since she has worked hard till her graduation, she should not look back at any point of time. Most importantly, if she gets shortlisted for an interview, she should be confident and never forget that this is what she wanted.
